01 / Begin at sea level
Start in the old town and harbour. A coffee and an unhurried walk let you see Nehaj from below before you climb towards it. Notice how the town’s roofline sits beneath the fortress.
There is no need to turn this opening chapter into a checklist. Choose a short route that fits the weather and your pace, then check the fortress’s opening hours before continuing.
02 / Let Nehaj be the centrepiece
Make time for both the exhibitions and the building. The central cistern, historic stonework and upper viewpoint each explain a different part of the story.
Our suggestion is 60–90 minutes at the fortress and its immediate surroundings, not including your approach. The actual time depends on your interests, your pace and what is accessible on the day.
03 / Go deeper into the town
For a second cultural stop, consider the separate Senj Town Museum in the Vukasović palace at Milana Ogrizovića 5. Check its own timetable; do not assume the fortress opening hours apply there.
Otherwise, slow down over lunch and wander back towards the harbour. Choosing one meaningful extra stop is often more rewarding than fitting in several rushed ones.
04 / Leave space for a longer stay
For another day, the wider Senj area opens towards the coast and Velebit. The tourist board also presents places such as Sveti Juraj, Zavratnica and Northern Velebit National Park. These are separate excursions, not a continuation of a short old-town walk.
