The story behind the stone.
A frontier town, its defenders and the fortress completed in 1558.
Discover moreAbove the rooftops of Senj, a Renaissance fortress holds the stories of a frontier. Come for the history. Stay for the horizon.

Some places ask you to look. Nehaj asks you to look closer. At the stone reused from an older town. At the narrow openings in walls made for defence. At the sea that explains why this hill mattered.
Completed in 1558, Nehaj brings together military architecture, the history of the Senj Uskoks and a remarkable coastal setting. This guide helps you make sense of the fortress — then follow its story down into Senj.

The upper level once belonged to the watch. Today, when access and visibility allow, it invites a slower encounter with the coast. Let the landscape become part of the story.

Explore Senj
Nehaj Fortress stands on Nehaj hill above Senj, on Croatia’s Adriatic coast. The museum lists the visitor location as Nehajski put 3, Senj.
It was completed in 1558 under the supervision of Ivan Lenković and Herbart VIII Auersperg. It is a 16th-century fortress, although visitors also search for it as Nehaj Castle.
We suggest 60–90 minutes for the fortress and its immediate surroundings, plus time for the uphill approach. This is an editorial estimate; your pace, exhibitions and access may change it.
Use the Senj Town Museum website or contact the museum directly. This independent guide does not sell admission tickets. Published seasonal hours are shown in our visitor guide.
Ask the museum about your particular needs, step-free routes and assistance before travelling. Do not assume that a historic fortress or its upper lookout offers step-free access.
Continue into Senj’s old town and harbour, or visit the separate town-museum location. Our suggested day in Senj and Senj.travel help you extend the visit.
